CBD for Covid? Study Suggests CBD Prevents COVID Infection

There is exciting news on how to protect yourself from COVID and it includes use of CBD (cannabidiol).

A study published in the peer-reviewed science journal Science Advances surveyed 1,212 patients in the US who were prescribed CBD.

The study found that patients taking 100 milligrams-per-milliliter (mg) oral doses a day of CBD returned positive COVID-19 tests at much lower rates than control groups who did not take CBD.

It also found found a “significant” negative relationship between CBD consumption and COVID-19 infection.

The study was conducted by 33 researchers at the University of Louisville and University of Chicago.

CBD (100 mg/ml oral solution per medical records) had a significant negative association with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests. This study highlights CBD as a potential preventative agent for early-stage SARS-CoV-2 infection and merits future clinical trials. "Our results suggest that CBD and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD can block SARS-CoV-2 infection at early and even later stages of infection,” the study states. Science Advances

CBD is an acronym for the cannabinoid Cannabidiol. This is a non-psychoactive (doesn't get you high) cannabis compound that is most prevalent in hemp plants. Hemp's cousin, marijuana, has much lower levels of CBD.

Scientists involved in the study also conducted lab tests that found CBD inhibited the growth and spread of the virus in the body.

“As a bottom line, what this says is that CBD has the potential to prevent infections, such as breakthrough infections, which might be one of the most useful applications,” said lead author Dr. Marsha Rosner from the Ben May Department for Cancer Research at the University of Chicago.

Keep in mind, this is a real world study with real world patients. While the study shows great promise for treating CBD for COVID, it must be noted that the study does not say CBD is a replacement for vaccines.

It instead suggests that a CBD for COVID vaccine combination could be beneficial.
